# Stories

> How to create a school story, how long it is shown, who sees it and how to unpublish it

Stories are short vertical cards with an image that students see at the top of their main page. They are handy for announcing a new cohort, reminding students about a deadline or congratulating them.

## How it works

* A story is one image in the vertical 9:16 format with a title and a display time.
* Students see published stories on the **My learning** page in the **Stories** block. Stories go in a row, newest first.
* When a student taps a card, the story opens full screen and switches to the next one after the set time. After the last story, the viewer closes.
* When a student has viewed a story, the ring around its card fades. This way the student sees which stories they have not opened yet.
* In the mobile app, stories open in the app's own full-screen viewer. The content is the same.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Stories do not depend on the tariff: the section is available in any school.

## Who can manage stories

The school owner and staff with the **School organization management** permission (in a corporate school — **Company management**) can create, edit and delete stories. Staff permissions are set up in **My school → Team** (in a corporate school — **Company → Administrators**). Learn more in [Access rights](https://faq.exode.biz/en/general/roles-permissions/access-rights.md).

## How to create a story

**1. Open the stories section**

Go to **My school → Content and media → Stories** (in a corporate school — **Company → Content and media → Stories**). The **Publishing a story** page opens with the list of the school's stories.

**2. Click “Add story”**

The form for a new story opens.

**3. Enter a title**

Click the **New story** heading and enter a title of up to 25 characters. If you leave the field empty, the story is saved with the title “New story”.

**4. Choose the duration**

In the **Duration of the story in seconds** field, choose a value from 3 to 15 seconds. The default is 3 seconds.

**5. Upload the image**

Upload a picture in the **Uploading photo** field. Before upload, an editor opens: crop the image to the vertical 9:16 format.

**6. Upload a cover (optional)**

In the **Uploading photo preview** field, you can upload a square cover for the card in the feed. If there is no cover, the card shows the main image.

**7. Choose the status and save**

By default, the status toggle is set to **Published**. To save the story without showing it to students, switch it to **Draft**. Click **Create**.

> [!TIP]
>
> The **Create** button becomes active only after you upload the main image.

## How to edit, hide or delete a story

* **Edit.** Click the story in the list or open the menu to the right of it and choose **Edit**. Make your changes and click **Save**. The **Save** button appears only when the form has changes.
* **Hide.** Open the story and switch the toggle to **Draft**. The story disappears from the students' feed but stays in the list.
* **Delete.** In the story menu, choose **Delete story** and confirm the deletion. A deleted story cannot be restored.

In the list, each story shows its title, status (**Published** or **Draft**), author and display duration.

## Who sees stories

* All signed-in school users see stories on the **My learning** page.
* Only stories with the **Published** status are shown. Students do not see drafts.
* You cannot choose an audience: separate stories for a course, a group or specific students cannot be set up.
* Guests who are not signed in do not see stories: the **My learning** page opens only after signing in.

## Rules and limits

| Parameter | Value |
| - | - |
| Title | Up to 25 characters |
| Display duration | 3 to 15 seconds, a whole number of seconds |
| Main image | Required, 9:16 format |
| Cover | Optional, square |
| Content | Image only |
| How many stories a student sees | The 15 latest published ones |
| How many stories the section list shows | The 15 latest created ones |

## Edge cases

* **Saving a published story again.** The publication date is updated every time you save a story with the **Published** status. After an edit, the story moves to the start of the students' feed.
* **Publishing a draft.** When you switch a draft to the **Published** status, the story goes to the start of the feed as a new one.
* **More than 15 stories.** Students see only the 15 newest published stories. Older ones are not shown in the feed until you delete or hide some of the newer ones.
* **Views.** A view is recorded once for each student. There are no view statistics in the interface.
* **Leaving the page without saving.** If the form has unsaved changes, a warning appears when you leave the page.

## Frequently asked questions

> **Can I upload a video to a story?**
>
> No. Stories are vertical image cards, and the form accepts only images. To show a video, place it in a lesson or on a school page, and announce it in a story.

> **How many seconds is a story shown?**
>
> As many as you chose in the **Duration of the story in seconds** field: from 3 to 15 seconds. Then the next story opens automatically.

> **Why don't students see my story?**
>
> Check three things. The story status must be **Published**, not **Draft**. The student must be signed in: stories are not shown to guests. And the feed shows only the 15 newest published stories — if you published more, the older ones are not visible.

> **Can I show a story only to students of one course or group?**
>
> No. All signed-in school users see a published story.

> **How do I remove a story for a while without deleting it?**
>
> Open the story and switch the toggle to **Draft**. The story disappears from the students' feed. To bring it back, choose **Published** again — it appears at the start of the feed.

> **Why did an edited story become first in the feed?**
>
> Every time you save a published story, its publication date is updated. The feed is sorted by this date, so the story moves to the start.

> **Can I restore a deleted story?**
>
> No. Deletion is confirmed in a separate window and cannot be undone. If you are not sure, use the **Draft** status.

> **Can I see who viewed a story?**
>
> No. The platform records the view to fade the ring on the student's card, but there are no view statistics for the school.

> **Do stories require a specific tariff?**
>
> No. Stories are available on any tariff. Learn more about tariffs in [Subscription and tariffs](https://faq.exode.biz/en/online-schools/getting-started/subscription-plans.md) (commercial schools only).
