# Content protection

> How the platform protects lessons and videos: locked lessons, text copy protection, app-only courses, a watermark on videos and a device limit

The platform protects course materials on several levels. Locked lessons are not sent to people without access. Text can be protected from copying. A whole course can be opened only in the app, where screenshots and screen recording are hidden. Videos uploaded to a course play with the student's watermark. In addition, the school can limit the number of devices per account.

## Available mechanisms

| Mechanism | What it protects | Where to turn it on |
| - | - | - |
| Locked lessons | Lesson content from people without access | Always works. Demo lessons (commercial schools only) are open to everyone |
| **Text copy protection** | Lesson text from copying in the browser and the app | **Settings → Main** of the course |
| **Full content protection** | The whole course: it opens only in the app, screenshots and screen recording are hidden | **Settings → Main** of the course |
| Protected video | Video files uploaded to the course | Works automatically |
| **Session limit** | Sharing an account with other people | **My school** / **Company** → **Login and registration** |

> [!WARNING]
>
> No mechanism gives absolute protection. For example, text can be retyped by hand, and a browser screen can be photographed with a phone. The mechanisms make copying harder and help find the source of a leak.

## Locked lessons

Only students with active access to the course and school employees receive the lesson content. Other visitors see the course program — the names of modules and lessons — but the theory, attachments and tasks of locked lessons are not sent to them.

A lesson with the **Free access (demo)** access type (commercial schools only) is open to everyone, including people who haven't bought the course. Demo lessons work well as a course showcase. How to mark a lesson as demo is described in [Lesson settings](https://faq.exode.biz/en/general/lessons-modules/settings.md).

## Text copy protection

Turn on **Text copy protection** in **Settings → Main**. While a student views the lesson theory, the following don't work on the page:

* copying selected text;
* the right-click context menu;
* Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V, or Cmd+C and Cmd+V on a Mac.

The exception is monospaced text, that is, code blocks. They can be copied so that students of technical courses can reuse code examples.

## Full content protection

Turn on **Full content protection** in **Settings → Main**. After you turn it on, the caption “The course can only be taken in the app” appears under the switch.

### How it works

* Lesson theory, pinned attachments and practice open only in the official app: the mobile app or the desktop app for Windows and macOS.
* In the app, screenshots and screen recording are hidden while the student takes the course.
* In the browser, the student sees the placeholder “Available in the app only” with an **Open in the app** button.
* Demo lessons stay open in the browser so that visitors can evaluate the course.
* School employees who manage the course see the content in the browser too.

See [Mobile app](https://faq.exode.biz/en/general/mobile-app/mobile-app.md).

### Special cases

| Situation | What the student sees |
| - | - |
| Outdated app version | “Update the app — The current app version does not support protected content” and an **Update the app** button |
| Desktop app on Linux | “The content is unavailable on Linux”. Screen protection doesn't work in the Linux version, so the course has to be opened on a phone, Windows or macOS |
| The student isn't signed in to the app | The platform asks them to sign in |

> [!TIP]
>
> Before you turn on full protection, warn your students that the course must be taken in the app. Otherwise, students who learn in the browser will see a placeholder instead of lessons.

## Video protection

Video files that you upload to course lessons play in a protected player after processing.

* **Watermark.** A mark like `@12345` is shown over the video — the account ID of the student watching it. If a lesson recording leaks online, you can identify the account by the mark. The student sees their ID in the profile settings as “Account ID”.
* **Only on your addresses.** The player plays videos only on the platform domains and your school domains, including a connected custom domain. You can't embed the video on someone else's site. When the school domain changes, the list updates automatically.
* **Window protection in the desktop app.** While the protected player is on screen, the app window is hidden from screen recording, even if full course protection is off.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Videos added as a YouTube or Vimeo link play in the player of these services. The watermark and the domain restriction don't apply to them.

## Device limit

The device limit is set for the whole school, not for a single course: **My school → Login and registration → Session limit** (in a corporate school — **Company → Login and registration → Session limit**).

| Setting | Value |
| - | - |
| **Maximum active sessions** | From 1 to 10 per user. If not set, the limit is 2 |
| **Soft mode** | When the limit is exceeded, the oldest session ends automatically |
| **Strict mode** | When the limit is reached, a new sign-in is blocked until the school administration ends the session on one of the devices |

In strict mode, the student sees the message “Device limit exceeded”. Signing in again from the same device is not blocked. Strict mode doesn't apply to school employees. You can end a student's sessions in their card on the **Sessions** tab. See [Login and registration](https://faq.exode.biz/en/general/school-setup/registration-settings.md) and [User card](https://faq.exode.biz/en/general/users/user-card.md).

If you lower the limit, extra sessions end for all school users, and the most recently active ones remain.

## Frequently asked questions

> **Can I block screenshots in the browser?**
>
> No. A browser doesn't allow blocking screenshots. You can hide screenshots and screen recording only in the app — to do this, turn on **Full content protection**.

> **What does a student see in the browser when full protection is on?**
>
> Instead of the lesson — the placeholder “Available in the app only” and an **Open in the app** button. Demo lessons still open in the browser as usual.

> **Can school employees check the course in the browser with full protection on?**
>
> Yes. Employees who manage the course see the content in the browser. The restriction applies to students.

> **A student says the app asks for an update. What should I do?**
>
> Their app version doesn't support protected content. Ask the student to update the app to the latest version.

> **A student can't paste text on the lesson page. Is this a bug?**
>
> No. When **Text copy protection** is on, Ctrl+V and Cmd+V don't work on the lesson theory page. If this gets in the way, turn off the protection in **Settings → Main**.

> **What does a mark like “@12345” on a video mean?**
>
> It is the account ID of the student watching the video. The mark helps you identify which account made a recording if the video becomes publicly available.

> **Are YouTube videos protected?**
>
> No. Videos added by a YouTube or Vimeo link are shown in the player of these services. For a video to have a watermark and not be embeddable on other sites, upload the video file to the lesson.

> **Can students copy code from a lesson with copy protection on?**
>
> Yes. Code blocks and other monospaced text are not protected and can be copied as usual.

> **How do I stop a student from sharing their account?**
>
> Turn on **Session limit** in **My school** / **Company** → **Login and registration**. The limit applies to all school users. In strict mode, nobody can sign in from a new device beyond the limit until you end one of the sessions in the student's card.

> **Does full protection cover demo lessons?**
>
> No. Demo lessons are an open course showcase. They are available to everyone in the browser and in the app.
