# Course settings

> Title, description, tags, card design, content protection, authors, team visibility and course actions

In the course settings, you set everything a student sees in the catalog and on the course page: the title, description, tags, logo, cover, promo video and card color. This is also where you turn on content protection, choose the lesson order and decide who on the team can see the course.

Go to **Courses**, select a course and open the **Settings** menu item. It has five subsections: **Main**, **Appearance and design**, **Authors and editors**, **Reviews**, **Questions & answers**.

## How it works

* Most fields are saved automatically right after you change them. There is no separate save button. The exceptions are the course address in the **SEO** block (the **Save url** button), the editors list and the review cards (the **Save** button).
* To change the settings, you need the **Course management** permission.
* Some settings are hidden for a course bundle, because it has no lessons of its own. Learn more in [Course bundles](https://faq.exode.biz/en/general/courses/course-packages.md).
* Prices and sales dates are not set here, but in the **Launch and tariffs** menu item (commercial schools only). See [Launch and tariffs](https://faq.exode.biz/en/online-schools/sales-payments/launches-and-pricing.md). In a corporate school, there is an **Access & assignments** item instead — see [Courses in a company](https://faq.exode.biz/en/corporate/courses.md).

## Main settings

The **Settings → Main** subsection holds the key course data.

| Field | Limits | Where it is shown |
| - | - | - |
| **Course title** | Required, from 1 to 130 characters. Spaces at the start and end are removed | Catalog, card, course page, browser tab title |
| **Brief description** | Up to 500 characters | Course page, page description for search engines |
| **Tags and labels** | Each tag is at least 2 characters long | Search, labels on the card, page keywords |

The title field label adapts to the course type: “Title of the video course”, “Title of the text course”, “Title of the course bundle”.

### Switches

| Switch | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Show in catalog** | Shows the course in the school catalog. The course appears there only if its launch is on sale. Learn more in [Creating courses](https://faq.exode.biz/en/general/courses/creating-courses.md). In a corporate school, this switch is on the **Access & assignments** page — see [Courses in a company](https://faq.exode.biz/en/corporate/courses.md) |
| **Full content protection** | The course content opens only in the app, with screenshots and screen recording hidden |
| **Free lesson progression** | Students take lessons in any order and complete them manually. When it is off, lessons open one by one |
| **Text copy protection** | Students can't copy the lesson text. Monospaced text (code blocks) can be copied |
| **Hide autonumbering of modules and lessons** | The course contents don't show the captions “Module 1”, “Lesson 1” and so on |

Both protections are described in [Content protection](https://faq.exode.biz/en/general/courses/content-protection.md).

If your school has several languages, the **Course languages** block appears below. Lesson content is filled in the main language, and you can't remove it. Blocks are translated into the other languages inside the lesson itself, and the student chooses the lesson language. See [Languages](https://faq.exode.biz/en/general/school-setup/languages.md).

### Tags and labels

Type a tag and press Enter. The clear icon on the right removes all tags at once.

> [!TIP]
>
> A tag that starts with the `#` symbol becomes a label on the course card. For example, the tag `#Bestseller` shows a “Bestseller” badge on the card. The card shows no more than two labels.

All tags, including labels, are added to the course page keywords. Learn more in [SEO optimization](https://faq.exode.biz/en/general/courses/seo.md).

### Chat with the curator

The **Chat with the curator** block controls the chat button in lessons. By default, the button is on and opens a conversation on the platform.

**1. Turn the button on or off**

The **Show the chat button in lessons** switch hides or shows the button for all students of the course.

**2. Choose where the button leads**

**Inside the platform** — a conversation with the curator inside the platform. **External link** — the link opens in a new tab, for example a Telegram chat.

**3. Enter the link for an external chat**

The link must be a valid URL up to 255 characters long. If you choose an external link and leave the field empty, the button doesn't appear in lessons.

### Course actions

At the bottom of the **Main** subsection, there are two actions:

* **Create a copy** — creates an exact copy of the course without students. Not available for course bundles.
* **Remove from list and archive** — moves the course to the archive. The course can no longer be bought (in a corporate school — enrolled in), but current students keep their access. For an archived course, the button is called **Return to list**.

What exactly is copied and how the archive works is described in [Creating courses](https://faq.exode.biz/en/general/courses/creating-courses.md).

## Appearance and design

The **Settings → Appearance and design** subsection controls how the course card and course page look.

### Card settings

| Setting | How it works |
| - | - |
| **Card color** and **Text color** | Set separately for the light and dark themes. Switch the theme with the **Light** and **Dark** buttons above the settings to set both versions. The reset button restores the default color |
| **Show enrollment count** | Shows on the catalog card how many students have enrolled. On by default |

### Branding

| Field | Requirements | Where it is used |
| - | - | - |
| **Logo of the course** | PNG or JPG. On upload, the image is cropped to a 1:1 square | On the course card. The same image appears in the link preview for the course in messengers and social networks |
| **Card cover** | PNG or JPG, square dimensions are recommended | The main image of the card |
| **Promo video** | A video file, a YouTube or Vimeo link, or a direct video link | On the course information page |

You can edit an image in the editor before uploading it.

### Custom link for the card

In the **Custom link when clicking the card** field, enter an external address, for example your landing page. If the link is set, a click on the card in the catalog opens this link instead of the standard course page. The link must be a valid URL up to 255 characters long.

### SEO

The **SEO** block (commercial schools only) holds the human-friendly course address and SEO tags. Learn more in [SEO optimization](https://faq.exode.biz/en/general/courses/seo.md).

## Authors and editors

The **Settings → Authors and editors** subsection defines who students see as the course authors and who on the team can work with the course.

### Authors on the course page

Authors are shown to students in the course information. Find a user with the search and add them to the list. The person who created the course becomes an author automatically.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Author status doesn't give the right to edit the course. Rights are granted separately — in the employee's access rights and in the **Visibility for the team** block.

### Visibility for the team

This block defines which school employees can see and edit the course. It doesn't affect student access.

| Switch | When on | When off |
| - | - | - |
| **Available to all editors according to their roles** | The course is available to all employees with course permissions: “Course management” to edit, “Course browsing” to view the content | The course is available only to users from the **Editors** list |
| **The practices are reviewed by all school curators** | All school curators see submitted practices, without access to the course content | Practices are available only to the curators of this course's groups |

Both switches are on by default. In a corporate school, a new course is created with both switches off — see [Roles and permissions in a company](https://faq.exode.biz/en/corporate/roles.md).

When you turn off the first switch, the **Editors** list appears. Editors can edit and see this specific course, even when it is hidden from the rest of the team. The course creator is added to the editors automatically. Employees with the **School organization management** or **School team management** permission (in a corporate school — **Company management** or **Company employees management**) can change the list.

> [!NOTE]
>
> While the editors list is empty, turning off the “Available to all editors” setting won't be saved. Add at least one editor.

Curators are not assigned to a course directly. For a curator to see the practices of a group's students, add them as a curator of that group. See [Group settings](https://faq.exode.biz/en/general/groups/group-settings.md).

## Reviews and questions

* **Reviews** — moderation of student reviews and rating collection settings. See [Reviews](https://faq.exode.biz/en/general/courses/reviews.md).
* **Questions & answers** — the FAQ block on the course page. For each question, you set the question text, the answer, whether it is active and the **Answer is expanded by default** mode. Inactive questions are not visible to users.

## Other course menu items

| Menu item | What's there | Learn more |
| - | - | - |
| **Content** | Modules, lessons and practice. For a bundle — the course list | [Creating lessons and modules](https://faq.exode.biz/en/general/lessons-modules/creating.md) |
| **Launch and tariffs** (commercial schools only) | Sales dates, tariffs, invite links | [Launch and tariffs](https://faq.exode.biz/en/online-schools/sales-payments/launches-and-pricing.md) |
| **Access & assignments** (corporate schools only) | Enrollment methods, invite links, automatic assignments | [Courses in a company](https://faq.exode.biz/en/corporate/courses.md) |
| **Groups** | Student groups, lesson access, deadlines | [Creating groups](https://faq.exode.biz/en/general/groups/creating-groups.md) |
| **Students** | Statistics and progress of the course students | [Adding to a course](https://faq.exode.biz/en/general/users/adding-to-course.md) |
| **Gamification** | Points for lessons and tasks | [Gamification](https://faq.exode.biz/en/general/gamification/gamification.md) |
| **Certificates** | Issuing a certificate when the course is completed | [Certificates](https://faq.exode.biz/en/general/gamification/certificates) |
| **Assignment checking** | Student practices to review | [Practice checking](https://faq.exode.biz/en/general/lessons-modules/checking-practice.md) |

A course bundle doesn't have the **Gamification**, **Certificates** and **Assignment checking** items.

## Frequently asked questions

> **Do I need to click “Save” after making changes?**
>
> No. The title, description, tags, switches, colors and images are saved automatically. You only need to click a button when you change the course address — **Save url** — and when you change the editors list or moderate reviews — **Save**.

> **How do I add a “Bestseller” or “New” badge to the course card?**
>
> Add a tag that starts with `#` to **Tags and labels**, for example `#New`. The card shows it without the `#` symbol. No more than two such labels are shown at a time.

> **What's the difference between the course logo and the card cover?**
>
> The logo is a square image shown on the card and in the course link preview in messengers. The card cover is the main image of the card, and it doesn't have to be cropped to a square.

> **How do I hide the number of students on the card?**
>
> Open **Settings → Appearance and design** and turn off **Show enrollment count** in the **Card settings** block.

> **Can the catalog card lead to my landing page?**
>
> Yes. Enter the address in the **Custom link when clicking the card** field. A click on the card opens your link instead of the standard course page.

> **Can a course author edit the course?**
>
> No. Authors are only shown to students in the course information. For an employee to edit the course, give them the **Course management** permission and, if the course is hidden from the team, add them to **Editors**. See [Access rights](https://faq.exode.biz/en/general/roles-permissions/access-rights.md).

> **How do I make a course visible only to certain employees?**
>
> In **Settings → Authors and editors**, turn off **Available to all editors according to their roles** and add the right people to the **Editors** list. Other employees will stop seeing the course. Students won't notice this change.

> **Why doesn't a course bundle have the protection switches and the curator chat?**
>
> A bundle has no lessons of its own, so these settings don't apply to it. Protection, lesson order and the curator chat are set up in each course included in the bundle.

> **How do I remove the curator chat button from lessons?**
>
> In **Settings → Main**, in the **Chat with the curator** block, turn off **Show the chat button in lessons**.

> **Why is the course turned on for the catalog but not shown there?**
>
> The **Show in catalog** switch works only together with an active launch. The course appears in the catalog when the launch is published and on sale, and a paid course has at least one active tariff. See [Launch and tariffs](https://faq.exode.biz/en/online-schools/sales-payments/launches-and-pricing.md). The conditions for a corporate school are in [Courses in a company](https://faq.exode.biz/en/corporate/courses.md).
