# Certificates

> How the platform issues course completion certificates, what they show and how the public authenticity check works.

A certificate is an electronic document that confirms a student completed a course. The platform issues it automatically when the student completes the course, if certificates are turned on in that course. Every certificate has a public page: anyone can open it to make sure the document is genuine and save it as a PDF.

## How it works

**1. The school turns on certificates in the course**

In **Courses → select a course → Certificates**, you turn on the **Issue a certificate** toggle, choose a template and fill in the details: signature, stamp, validity period. Learn more in [Setting up certificates](https://faq.exode.biz/en/general/gamification/creating-certificates.md).

**2. The student completes the course**

When the student has gone through the course lessons, the lesson shows the **You have completed all the lessons** block with the **Complete the training** button. The certificate is issued only after the student clicks this button.

**3. The platform issues the certificate**

This usually takes a few seconds. While the certificate is being prepared, the student sees **Your certificate is being issued…** on the course page.

**4. The student gets a notification**

The student receives the **You have received a certificate** notification with the **Open certificate** button. The certificate appears on the course page and in **My certificates**.

**5. Anyone can verify the certificate by link**

The student shares the public link or QR code. Anyone who opens the link sees the certificate and an authenticity mark.

## What the certificate shows

| Data | Where it comes from |
| - | - |
| Student name | The full name from the student's profile at the time of issue. If the name is empty — “Course participant” |
| Course name | The course name at the time of issue |
| Number of lessons | The number of lessons with content that were available to the student |
| School name and logo | The school name and its icon |
| Signature caption and signer role | Fields from the course certificate settings |
| Signature and stamp images | Images uploaded in the certificate settings |
| Brand color | The color from the certificate settings, or the accent color of the school theme if none is set |
| Certificate number | A unique number assigned by the platform |
| Issue date and validity period | The day the course was completed and the expiry date, if a validity period is set |
| QR code | Leads to the verification page of this certificate |

The labels on the certificate itself (“Certificate”, “Issue date”, “Valid until” and others) are shown in Russian, English or Uzbek. The student name, course name and signature are not translated.

## Data is locked in at the time of issue

When the platform issues a certificate, it saves all its data. From then on, the document is shown only from this copy, like a paper diploma.

| What changed after issue | What happens to the issued certificate |
| - | - |
| The student changed their name in the profile | Nothing, the certificate keeps the old name |
| The course was renamed | Nothing, the old name stays |
| The template, color, signature or stamp was changed in the certificate settings | Nothing, the changes apply only to new certificates |
| The validity period was changed | Nothing, issued certificates keep their old expiry date |
| Certificates were turned off in the course | Issued certificates stay available by link |

## Public authenticity check

Every certificate has a unique link with a code of 12 Latin letters. The student can send the link and QR code to an employer or add them to a resume. The page opens without signing in.

| Situation | What the page shows |
| - | - |
| The certificate is valid | The certificate and the **Authentic certificate** mark |
| The validity period has ended | The certificate and the **Certificate has expired** mark |
| The link is wrong | The **Certificate not found** message |

## Rules and limits

* A student gets no more than one certificate per course.
* A certificate is issued only at the moment the course is completed. Students who completed the course before certificates were turned on will not get one.
* You cannot set up a certificate for a course bundle. Turn on certificates in each course of the bundle.
* The school interface has no tools to change or revoke an issued certificate.
* The school interface has no separate list of issued certificates. To get issue data, connect the **Certificate issued** [webhook](https://faq.exode.biz/en/general/developers/webhooks.md) or use the [API](https://faq.exode.biz/en/general/developers/api.md).

## Frequently asked questions

> **Do I need to issue certificates manually?**
>
> No. The certificate is issued automatically when the student clicks **Complete the training** in a course with certificates turned on. The interface has no button for manual issue.

> **Students already completed the course, and we only turned on certificates now. Will they get them?**
>
> No. A certificate is issued only at the moment the course is completed. If the student completed the course while certificates were off, they do not get a certificate, and it will not appear later.

> **Can a student get two certificates for one course?**
>
> No. A student can have only one certificate per course. The student cannot complete the course a second time either: after completion, the progress status no longer changes.

> **A student changed their last name. Will the certificate update?**
>
> No. The certificate keeps the data from the time of issue, so profile changes do not affect it. Ask students to check their full name in the profile before they complete the course.

> **How can an employer verify a certificate?**
>
> They only need to open the certificate link or scan the QR code on it. The verification page opens without registration and shows the **Authentic certificate** or **Certificate has expired** mark.

> **What happens to a certificate when its validity period ends?**
>
> The certificate stays available by link, but the page shows the **Certificate has expired** mark: “This certificate was issued by exode but is no longer valid”.

> **Can I issue a certificate for a course bundle?**
>
> No, a course bundle has no certificate settings. Turn on certificates in each course of the bundle: the student gets a certificate for each completed course.

> **Where can I see who received certificates?**
>
> The school interface has no separate list. Connect the **Certificate issued** webhook, which fires on every issue, or get the list through the school API.

> **Who can set up certificates?**
>
> Staff with the course management permission. Certificates do not depend on the school's tariff features: every regular course has the **Certificates** section. Learn more about permissions in [Access rights](https://faq.exode.biz/en/general/roles-permissions/access-rights.md).
