# Group settings

> Group curators, access period limit, lesson opening schedule, access to individual lessons, deadlines, chats and Telegram, group deletion

The settings define who leads the group, how long course access lasts, in what order lessons open and where students communicate. The settings apply only to the students of this group. To learn how to create a group, see [Groups and cohorts](https://faq.exode.biz/en/general/groups/creating-groups.md).

Open **Courses → course → Groups → group → Settings**. At the top of the page, there are two tabs: **Settings** and **Chat and channel**.

In a corporate school, the **Settings** tab also has the **Automatic assignments** block — see [Automatic course assignment](https://faq.exode.biz/en/corporate/auto-assignment.md).

## How changes are saved

* You change the group name with the edit icon next to the title, and it is saved right away. The length is up to 100 characters.
* Other changes on the **Settings** and **Chat and channel** tabs are saved with the **Save** button in the bottom panel. The panel appears as soon as you change something. **Cancel** restores the previous values.
* If you leave the page without saving the changes, the platform warns you.
* If the form has an error on another tab, the platform switches to that tab when you save and scrolls to the field with the error.

Staff with the “Course management” permission can save the group settings. A curator also needs “Product management” or “School user management” (in a corporate school — “Company user management”) for this.

## Group curators

Curators check the practices of the group's students and answer their questions.

**1. Find a staff member**

In the **Group curators** block, start typing a name. The list shows only team members with the “Course curator” permission. The **Team list** link leads to **My school → Team** (in a corporate school — **Company → Administrators**).

**2. Add the people you need**

Choose one or more curators. To remove a curator, click the cross next to their name.

**3. Save**

Click **Save**.

How it works:

* When a student joins the group, one of the group curators is assigned to them. Curators are assigned in turn, so students are spread evenly between them. A deactivated staff member doesn't get new students but stays in the group's curator list and takes part in the distribution again after activation.
* Students who were already in the group are not assigned a new curator automatically. You can change the curator for a specific student in their [card](https://faq.exode.biz/en/general/users/user-card.md).
* Curators become administrators of the group chat and channel.
* If no curators are selected, you see the “Curators not selected” warning: personal chats with curators will not be created.

The **Group curators** block is visible to staff with the “School organization management” or “School team management” permission (in a corporate school — “Company management” or “Company employees management”).

## Access restriction

The **Access restriction** block closes the course for the group's students after a set time. A course bundle does not have this block.

**1. Turn on the restriction**

Turn on **Limit access time to the course**.

**2. Set the duration**

In the **Specify access duration** field, enter a number and choose a unit: minute, hour, day, week or month.

**3. Choose the starting point**

**Since joining the group** — each student has their own period. **Starting from the selected date** — one period for everyone; set the date and time.

How the period is counted:

* The course closes after the set time from the starting point. The start of learning is not postponed: the course stays open until it closes, even if the common date has not come yet.
* For the **Since joining the group** option, the countdown starts from the date the student enrolled in the course — the payment or the first time access was granted.
* If the student is in several groups of the course and at least one has no restriction, they study with no end date.
* A change of the period applies to all students of the group, including those who are already studying.

When the period ends, the lessons get the “Access expired” status. The student's progress is kept. Learn more about periods in [Course access](https://faq.exode.biz/en/general/users/adding-to-course.md).

## Lesson opening schedule

The schedule opens lessons or modules gradually rather than all at once. A course bundle does not have this block.

**1. Turn on the schedule**

Turn on **Open access on a schedule**.

**2. Choose the step**

**One lesson at a time** — the next lesson opens each time. **One module at a time** — the whole next module opens.

**3. Choose when to open**

**By weekdays** — select the days. **Once per interval** — set the **Interval duration**.

**4. Set the starting point**

**Since joining the group** or **Starting from the selected date** — then set the start date.

How lessons open:

| Mode | The first lesson or module | The next ones |
| - | - | - |
| **By weekdays** | On the first selected weekday, starting from the starting point | Each next one on the next selected weekday |
| **Once per interval** | At the starting point | Each next one after the set interval following the previous one |

The schedule counts only lessons with content. Until a lesson opens, the student sees it with the “Scheduled” status.

## Access to lessons

The **Access to lessons** section in the group menu manages individual lessons. It shows only published modules and lessons with content. A course bundle does not have this section.

* **Turn a lesson on or off for the group.** A checkmark means the lesson is open, empty means it is closed. The change is saved right away. The top shows how many lessons are turned on out of the total.
* **Set a lesson opening date.** Click the calendar icon next to the lesson, choose an option and click **Save**.

| Opening option | When the lesson opens |
| - | - |
| **Not set** | No date of its own: the lesson follows the general group schedule |
| **Common date** | On the selected calendar date |
| **From the moment of course registration** | After a set time from the student's enrollment in the course |
| **Since the completion of the previous one** | After a set time from when the student handed in the previous lesson |

If a lesson has its own date and the general schedule is turned on, the lesson opens on the later of the two dates. The student sees a turned-off lesson with the “Disabled by group” status — unless the lesson is open in another of their groups.

> [!NOTE]
>
> The lesson order is the same for all groups of the course. You change it in the course content.

## Completion deadlines

The **Completion deadlines** section sets due dates. Turn on **Set deadlines for the group**, then click the calendar icon next to the course, module, lesson or practice. The deadlines apply only in this group.

**What the deadline counts from:**

| Option | How it is counted |
| - | - |
| **Common date** | One deadline for all students — a date and time |
| **From the moment of course registration** | The set number of days from the student's enrollment date |
| **From the opening** | The set number of days from the moment the material became available to the student |
| **Since the completion of the previous one** | The set number of days after the previous lesson or practice was handed in |

For the deadline of the whole course, only **Common date** and **From the moment of course registration** are available. A deadline in days is a whole number from 1 to 3650. A material's deadline cannot be later than the deadline of its module or course.

**If missed:**

| Option | What happens |
| - | - |
| **Mark** | The material stays available. The student sees the “Overdue” tag, and the curator sees the overdue in the student card and the student table |
| **Reduce points** | The student can still hand it in after the deadline, but the points for the practice attempt are reduced by 20%, by at least 1 point. The practice pass counts by the original result |
| **Close** | After the deadline, the next materials close, even if the student hands this one in later. You can open them with the **Open access** button in the student card |

## Chat and channel

On the **Chat and channel** tab, the **Inside the platform** block has two toggles:

| Setting | What it is |
| - | - |
| **Group chat in messenger** | A chat for the group's students and curators to communicate |
| **Channel in messenger** | A channel where only school team members can write |

After you save, the chat or channel is created, and all students and curators of the group are added to it. The **Open chat** and **Open channel** buttons lead to the messenger. New group students are added to the chat and channel automatically, and students removed from the group are excluded.

If you turn off the chat or channel, it is archived. When you turn it on again, it comes back with the group participants.

## Telegram

You can link the group to a Telegram channel and group. Then the school bot invites students and removes them when they leave the group.

**1. Connect the school bot**

If the bot is not connected, the tab shows the “School Telegram bot token is not set” banner. Click it to go to **My school → Login and registration** (in a corporate school — **Company → Login and registration**). Learn more in [Telegram bot](https://faq.exode.biz/en/general/communication/telegram-bot.md).

**2. Add the bot in Telegram**

Add the school bot as an administrator to the Telegram channel and group with the permission to invite users.

**3. Enter the IDs**

Fill in **Telegram channel ID** and **Telegram group ID**. The fields accept only digits, and the ID can start with a minus — for example, -12345678. You can enter only a channel or only a group.

**4. Set up the invitation (optional)**

In the **Telegram settings** block, set a welcome message — up to 500 characters, with Markdown (V2) support. Turn on **Request Telegram before payment** if connecting Telegram should be a condition for proceeding to payment (in a corporate school — **Request Telegram before course enrollment**: connecting Telegram will be a condition for proceeding to the training).

**5. Save**

Click **Save**.

How it works:

* When a student with linked Telegram joins the group, the bot sends them a private message with personal invitation links to the channel and group.
* If the student links Telegram later, the invitations arrive automatically.
* When a student is removed from the group, the bot removes them from the Telegram channel and group and revokes their link.
* If the group has students with Telegram who have not received an invitation yet, the **Missed Telegram invites** block appears with the **Send invites** button.

Each student's invitation status is shown in the **Students** section, in the **Telegram** column:

| Status | What it means |
| - | - |
| **Invite link sent** | The bot sent the student an invitation |
| **Invite link not sent** | The invitation has not been sent yet — use **Send invites** |
| **Telegram not linked** | The student has no Telegram in their account |
| **Previous chat link sent** | The channel or group ID was changed — the student needs a new invitation |

## Delete a group

**1. Open the actions**

On the **Settings** tab, in the **Actions** block, click **Delete group**.

**2. Confirm**

Enter the group name and click **Confirm**.

When you delete a group, its chat and channel are deleted, and all students leave it. Students with no other groups in this course lose access to the course. The students' progress is kept.

> [!WARNING]
>
> You cannot delete the last group of a course, a group selected in a tariff, or a group linked to a course bundle. You see the message “Cannot delete the last group of a product”, “Unlink the group from the tariff” or “Detach the group from the course package”.

## Frequently asked questions

> **I added a curator, but the group students don't have them. Why?**
>
> A curator is assigned to a student only when the student joins the group. Students who were already studying are not assigned a curator automatically — assign one manually in the student card.

> **Why isn't the staff member I need in the curator list?**
>
> The list includes only team members with the “Course curator” permission. Grant this permission to the staff member in **My school → Team** (in a corporate school — **Company → Administrators**).

> **I changed the access period. Will it apply to students who are already studying?**
>
> Yes. The period is recalculated for all students of the group. If the new period has already passed, the students' access closes.

> **What is the difference between the access restriction and the schedule?**
>
> The access restriction closes the whole course after a set time. The schedule opens lessons gradually, but does not close the course. You can turn them on together.

> **Why does a student see a lesson as “Scheduled” even though the date has passed?**
>
> Check all opening conditions: the general group schedule and the lesson's own date on the **Access to lessons** page. The lesson opens on the later of these dates. If the **Since the completion of the previous one** option is selected, the lesson waits until the student hands in the previous one.

> **How do I open a material closed by a deadline for a student?**
>
> Open the student card, the **Learning** tab, the course. Next to the closed material, click **Open access**. You need the “School user management” (in a corporate school — “Company user management”) or “Course student management” permission for this.

> **The bot does not invite students to Telegram. What should I check?**
>
> Check that the school bot token is set, the bot is added as an administrator to the channel and group, and the IDs in the settings are correct. The student must have Telegram linked. For those who missed the invitation, send it with the **Send invites** button.

> **What happens if I change the Telegram channel or group ID?**
>
> Students who were invited to the previous chat get the “Previous chat link sent” status. Click **Send invites** so the bot sends them links to the new one.

> **Why are there no access restriction and schedule blocks?**
>
> This is a course bundle group. Access restriction, schedule, access to lessons and deadlines are not available for bundles — a bundle group's settings keep curators, chat and channel, Telegram and group deletion.

> **Is there a limit on the number of students in a group?**
>
> No. The limit applies only to one add operation — up to 250 students at a time.
