# School address and domain

> The base address on exode.biz and your own domain: address rules, how to change it, redirects, HTTPS and what to do if the school doesn't open

Every school has an address where students open it. Right after creation, it is a base address like
`my-school.exode.biz`. Later you can connect your own domain, for example `my-school.com`, so that the school opens
under your brand.

You set up the address in **My school → Settings → Information and domain**, in the **School domain** block (in a
corporate school — **Company → Settings → Information and domain**, the **Company domain** block). Staff with the
“School settings management” permission (in a corporate school — “Company settings management”) can change it.

## Base domain or your own

| | Base domain | Your domain |
| - | - | - |
| Address | `my-school.exode.biz` | Your domain or subdomain, for example `my-school.com` or `learn.company.com` |
| When it is available | Right after the school is created | After it is connected through support |
| Who changes the address | You, in the school settings | Exode support |
| HTTPS | Works right away | The Exode team issues an SSL certificate when connecting |

In the **School domain** block, you choose which address is the main one. Links the platform generates, for example
invite links and payment links (commercial schools only), are built from the main address. Under the address field,
you can see the “Current link to the school” (in a corporate school — “Current link to the company”) — you can open
or copy it.

## Base domain rules

* Length — 3 to 20 characters.
* Only Latin letters, digits and hyphens — the “Latin letters, digits and hyphens” hint under the field reminds you of this. The field doesn't accept spaces, dots, underscores or Cyrillic: the address becomes a subdomain, where these characters are not allowed.
* Uppercase letters automatically become lowercase.
* The address is unique: no other Exode school may use it.
* Some addresses are reserved by the platform and are not available for registration.

The check starts once you have entered 3 characters, and runs half a second after you stop
typing.

| Message | What it means |
| - | - |
| “This address is already taken” | Another school uses the address |
| “This address is not available for registration” | The address is reserved by the platform |
| “The domain may contain only Latin letters, digits and hyphens” | The address contains invalid characters. Use Latin letters, digits and hyphens |

## How to change the base domain

**1. Open the address settings**

Go to **My school** / **Company** → **Settings → Information and domain**. In the **School domain** block, **Base domain**
must be selected.

**2. Enter the new address**

Type the address in the **School's base domain** field (in a corporate school — **Company's base domain**). Wait for the check: if there is an error, the reason appears under the field.

**3. Save**

Click **Save domain**. The buttons appear only when the address differs from the current one. **Cancel**
restores the previous address.

**4. Go to the new address**

The page reloads, and the school opens at the new address.

### What happens after the address changes

* **Old links keep working.** The platform remembers the school's previous addresses and redirects from them
  to the new one.
* **The old address is released.** Another school can take it. After that, old links will lead
  to that school.
* **Videos in lessons keep playing.** The platform updates the list of addresses where the video player
  is allowed by itself.
* **Telegram sign-in needs to be set up again.** If students sign in via Telegram, add the new address
in the bot settings in BotFather. See [Login and registration](https://faq.exode.biz/en/general/school-setup/registration-settings.md).

> [!WARNING]
>
> Update the school address right away everywhere you have published it: on your website, in social networks, in ads and mailings.
> The redirect from the old address works only until another school takes it.

## Your own domain

The Exode team connects your own domain. You can't enter it in the settings yourself.

**1. Write to support**

In the **School domain** block, click the **Your domain** option. While the domain is not connected, it says
“Click to contact support to connect it” — Exode Telegram support opens.

**2. Set up DNS**

Set up your domain's DNS records following support's instructions. You do this in your domain registrar's panel.

**3. Wait for the connection**

The Exode team issues an SSL certificate and links the domain to the school. After that, your address appears
in the **Your domain** card.

**4. Make the domain the main one**

Select **Your domain**. The page reloads, and the school opens on your domain.

The **Your school's domain** field is read-only. To change or disconnect your domain, write
to support.

### Redirect from the base address

When your own domain is the main one, the school still opens at the base address too. To send everyone to your domain,
turn on **Redirect from the base to your own domain**. Then, for example, `my-school.exode.biz` will open
`my-school.com`.

## How the school opens

* All school pages work over HTTPS. If you open the address via `http://`, the browser switches to `https://`.
* If you open the base address while your own domain is the main one and the redirect is on, the school opens on your own
  domain.
* If there is no school at the address, the “School not found” page opens.
* If the school's subscription has ended, the website shows the “The school website is inactive” screen. See
  [Subscription and tariffs](https://faq.exode.biz/en/online-schools/getting-started/subscription-plans.md).

## If the school doesn't open

| What you see | Possible cause | What to do |
| - | - | - |
| “School not found” | A typo in the address. The address was changed, and someone else took the old one. The school was deleted | Check the address in **Settings → Information and domain** — the “Current link to the school” field |
| “The school website is inactive” | The subscription has ended | Renew the subscription in **My school → Subscription and tariff**. In a corporate school, contact Exode support |
| Your domain doesn't open or the browser complains about the certificate | DNS hasn't updated yet or is set up incorrectly, the domain isn't linked to the school | Check the DNS records. DNS changes don't take effect immediately. If the problem persists, write to support |
| The school opens at the base address, not on your domain | The base domain is selected as the main one, or the redirect is off | Select **Your domain** and turn on **Redirect from the base to your own domain** |
| Telegram sign-in doesn't work after the address change | The bot settings contain the old address | Add the new address in BotFather |

## Frequently asked questions

> **Can I change the school address after creation?**
>
> Yes. You change the base domain in **My school** / **Company** → **Settings → Information and domain** with the
> **Save domain** button.
> Support changes your own domain.

> **Will old links work after the address change?**
>
> Yes, the platform redirects from the old address to the new one. But the old address is released: if another
> school takes it, the links will start leading to that school. So update the address in all your materials.

> **Why is the address taken if I don't see such a school?**
>
> Any school on Exode can use the address, including an inactive one. If you see the message
> “This address is not available for registration”, the address is reserved by the platform. Choose another one.

> **Why can't I use an underscore or a dot in the address?**
>
> The base address is part of a domain name. It can contain only Latin letters, digits and hyphens.

> **Can I connect a subdomain, for example learn.company.com?**
>
> Yes. You can connect both a domain and a subdomain. Exode support does the connection.

> **Do I need to buy an SSL certificate?**
>
> No. The base address works over HTTPS right away. For your own domain, the Exode team issues a certificate when
> connecting it.

> **Can I use both the base address and my own domain?**
>
> Yes. While **Redirect from the base to your own domain** is off, the school opens at both addresses.

> **Can I connect several domains of my own?**
>
> No. A school can have one base address and one domain of its own.

> **Is my own domain included in the tariff?**
>
> Your own domain is not among the tariff limits on the **Subscription and tariff** page (commercial schools only). Ask support
> about the connection terms.

> **After the address change, students can't sign in via Telegram. What should I do?**
>
> Open the bot settings in BotFather and add the new school address to Redirect URIs and Trusted Origins.
> Learn more in [Login and registration](https://faq.exode.biz/en/general/school-setup/registration-settings.md).
