# Available languages

> How to choose the school's interface languages, set the default language and what changes for students.

A school can work in one or several languages. You choose which languages students see the interface in and set the main language. The language list determines the students' language switch and the translation fields in the settings.

The settings are in **My school → Settings → Design and brand** (in a corporate school — **Company → Settings → Design and brand**), in the **Available languages** block. Changes are saved automatically.

## Which languages the platform has

| Language | Name in the list |
| - | - |
| English | English |
| Russian | Русский |
| Uzbek | O'zbekcha |
| Karakalpak | Qaraqalpaq |

If the school hasn't changed the list yet, three languages are available: English, Русский and O'zbekcha.

## How to set up the list

**1. Check the languages you need**

Turn languages on with checkboxes. The selected languages are at the top of the list, the rest are below. A new language is added to the end of the selected ones.

**2. Put the languages in order**

Drag the selected languages. The first language in the list is the main one, and it has a marker icon next to it.

**3. Check the result**

The list is saved automatically, and the interface switches to a suitable language right away.

> [!NOTE]
>
> At least one language must stay selected. If the list has one language, you can't uncheck it.

## Which language a student sees

The platform chooses the language in this order:

1. The language the student chose themselves, if it is in the school's list.
2. The browser or device language, if it is in the school's list.
3. The first language from the school's list.

The student's choice is remembered in the browser, and on the next visit the website opens in the same language.

## What changes for students and staff

| Where | What happens |
| - | - |
| Language switch | Appears only if the school has more than one language. It is on the login and registration pages, in the profile settings, in the settings menu in the header and in the footer of the mobile version of the website |
| Fields with translations | Menu item titles, footer sections and links, contacts and addresses have a translation icon. If there is more than one language, clicking the field opens separate fields for each school language |
| Courses | A course without its own language settings is run in the school's main language. If there is more than one language, you can choose the content languages in the course settings |
| Course translations | Translations into a language that is turned off in the school aren't shown to students |

Learn more about course languages in [Course settings](https://faq.exode.biz/en/general/courses/settings.md).

## A new language

If the language you need isn't among the four, click **Request language addition** under the list. The button opens the Exode support chat in Telegram.

## Frequently asked questions

> **How do I make the school always open in Russian?**
>
> Keep only Russian in the list. Then the language switch disappears, and all students see the interface in Russian.

> **How do I change the school's main language?**
>
> Drag the language you need to the first place in the list. Students whose browser language doesn't match any of the school's languages get the main language.

> **Why does a student see the website in English when the main language is Russian?**
>
> English is in the school's language list, and it matched the student's browser language, or the student chose it themselves. The main language applies only when the student's language isn't in the school's list.

> **What happens to students if I turn off the language they study in?**
>
> The next time they open the website, they see the browser language or the school's main language. Course translations into the turned-off language stop being shown.

> **Does the platform translate my courses and texts automatically?**
>
> No. The platform translates only the interface. You fill in course names, lessons, menu items and the footer yourself in the languages you need.

> **Why don't translations open when I click a field?**
>
> Translation fields open only when the school has more than one language selected. Add the languages you need in the **Available languages** block.

> **Can I add a language that isn't in the list?**
>
> Only through support. Click **Request language addition** under the language list.
