# Login and registration

> Public and private school, registration and login methods, device limit, Telegram sign-in and profile privacy.

These settings define who can get into the school and how. You choose whether registration is open to everyone, which login methods are available and from how many devices a student can be signed in at the same time.

The settings are in **My school → Login and registration** (in a corporate school — **Company → Login and registration**). Each block is saved with its own **Save** button, which appears after you make changes. The **Cancel** button restores the previous values.

## How a student registers

1. The student enters an email or a phone number — depending on the enabled methods.
2. The platform sends a confirmation code.
3. The student enters the code. If the school has documents that must be accepted with a checkbox, they are shown at the same step.
4. The account is created, and the student signs in to the school right away.

There are no extra questionnaire fields at registration: you can't add your own questions to the form in the school settings.

## Public or private school

In the **School privacy** block (in a corporate school — **Company privacy**), choose one of the options.

| Option | How it works |
| - | - |
| **Public school** (in a corporate school — **Public company**) | Registration for the school is available to all website visitors. The catalog and course pages are open without signing in |
| **Private school** (in a corporate school — **Private company**) | Registration is closed. You add new students yourself. The catalog, course pages and payment pages open only after signing in |

In a private school, the login page has no registration. A visitor without an account can't register on their own — neither through the login form nor at payment. Students are added manually in the **People** section. Learn more in [Adding users](https://faq.exode.biz/en/general/users/adding-users.md).

In a corporate school, registration is closed by default — see [Company connection and setup](https://faq.exode.biz/en/corporate/setup.md).

> [!NOTE]
>
> If you make the school private, visitors who haven't signed in and already have the website open are automatically returned to the home page.

### Advanced settings

Under the school type selection, there is an expandable **Advanced settings** block. It is saved with the same **Save** button.

| Switch | If on | If off (default) |
| - | - | - |
| **Profiles are visible to all school users** | School users see each other's profiles | A profile is visible only to its owner and staff with the **Course curator** or **School user management** permissions |
| **Users can create chats** | Any school user can start a chat | Only school team members create new chats |

In a corporate school, the first switch is called **Profiles are visible to all company members**, and the permission is **Company user management**.

## Registration and login methods

In a public school, the block is called **Registration methods**, in a private one — **Login methods**.

| Method | Default | Public school | Private school |
| - | - | - | - |
| **Email** | On | Yes | Yes |
| **Phone number** | On | Yes | Yes |
| **Apple (native application)** | Off | Yes | No |
| **Telegram** | Off | Yes | No |

How the restrictions work:

* **In a public school**, the switches restrict only the registration of new students. Students who already have an account can sign in with a turned-off method too: if email or phone is off, the login page shows the **Sign in via login** or **Sign in via phone** button.
* **In a private school**, a turned-off method also disappears from the login form. A student whose account has only an email won't be able to sign in if email login is off.
* **Sign-in with Apple** is shown only in the iPhone app.
* **Sign-in with Telegram** works only while it is on. If you turn Telegram off, nobody can sign in with it, including students who registered earlier.

> [!WARNING]
>
> You can't turn off all methods. In a public school, at least one method must stay, otherwise you will see the hint **At least 1 method - or make the school private**. In a private school, email or phone must stay: **At least 1 main method - email or phone**.

## Sign-in with Telegram

The **Telegram setup** block appears in a public school when the **Telegram** method is on. The Telegram sign-in button appears for students only when a **Client ID** or a bot token together with its name is specified.

**1. Prepare the bot**

Open the @BotFather bot in Telegram, choose your bot and go to the **Login Widget** setting. If the method isn't enabled, click **Switch to OpenID Connect Login** and confirm.

**2. Copy the Client ID**

Paste it into the **Client ID** field in the **Telegram login** block.

**3. Add the school addresses**

In @BotFather, enter the school addresses in the **Redirect URIs** and **Trusted Origins** fields. The exact addresses — the base domain and your own domain, if it is connected — are shown in the **How to connect** hint in the top right corner of the block.

**4. Enter the bot token**

Paste the token into the **Bot's token** field in the **Bot notifications** block. The platform checks the token and fills in the **Bot's name** by itself. The school uses this bot to send notifications to students who have linked Telegram.

**5. Save**

Click **Save**.

> [!TIP]
>
> Changes in @BotFather don't apply immediately. Test Telegram sign-in in your browser's incognito mode. Learn more about the school bot in [Telegram bot](https://faq.exode.biz/en/general/communication/telegram-bot.md).

## Session limit

The **Session limit** block restricts from how many devices one student can be signed in to the account at the same time. This protects courses from access sharing.

In the **Maximum active sessions (from 1 to 10)** field, enter a number. The default is 2. Then choose the mode.

| Mode | What happens when signing in from a new device over the limit |
| - | - |
| **Soft mode** (default) | The sign-in goes through, and the student is automatically signed out on the very first device |
| **Strict mode** | The sign-in is blocked. The student can't sign in from a new device until the school administration ends the session on one of the previous ones |

### How strict mode works

* The platform counts all devices the student has signed in from, even if they later signed out themselves. A slot is freed only when a staff member ends the session in the student's card on the **Sessions** tab. Learn more in [User card](https://faq.exode.biz/en/general/users/user-card.md).
* Signing in again from the same device doesn't count as a new one.
* The restriction doesn't apply to school staff with permissions in the control panel.
* A student who has reached the limit sees the **Device limit exceeded** window with the **Contact support** button. The button leads to the link of the “Support” contact from the footer, and if there is none — to Exode support.

### If you lower the limit

When you save a smaller number, the platform goes through all school users with active sessions. Each user keeps the sessions they were active in most recently, within the new limit. The other sessions are ended. This happens in either mode.

## Frequently asked questions

> **Why is there no registration on the login page?**
>
> The school is private, or the school's subscription has ended. In both cases, the login page offers only sign-in for existing accounts.

> **I turned off email registration. Can students who registered by email still sign in?**
>
> In a public school — yes. The switches restrict only new registrations, and the login page shows the **Sign in via login** button. In a private school, a turned-off method also disappears from the login form.

> **A student signed out on an old phone but can't sign in from a new one. Why?**
>
> The school has strict mode on. The old device keeps occupying a slot until a staff member ends its session. Open the student's card, the **Sessions** tab, and end the session on the old device.

> **What does a student see in soft mode when signing in from an extra device?**
>
> The sign-in goes through as usual. On the very first device, the student is automatically signed out.

> **Does the limit apply to teachers and curators?**
>
> Strict mode doesn't block sign-in for staff who have permissions in the control panel. Students won't be able to sign in from new devices over the limit.

> **Can I sell courses in a private school?**
>
> New visitors can neither register nor open payment pages without signing in. Only students who already have an account can buy courses. Add the others manually.

> **Why don't students have a Telegram sign-in button?**
>
> Check three conditions: the school is public, the **Telegram** method is on and saved, and the **Telegram setup** block has a **Client ID** or a bot token with a name.

> **I'm making the school private. What happens to Telegram sign-in?**
>
> In a private school, the Telegram and Apple sign-in buttons are not shown, and their switches are hidden. Warn students that they need to sign in by email or phone. If you make the school public again, the buttons come back.

> **Students can't message each other. Why?**
>
> By default, only school team members create new chats. Turn on **Users can create chats** in the **Advanced settings** block and save. Chats already created keep working with either value.

> **Can I add my own fields to registration, for example city?**
>
> No. At registration, a student enters only an email or a phone number and the confirmation code. They fill in their name and other data in the profile.
