A course consists of modules and lessons. A module groups lessons into a section, and a lesson holds theory and, if needed, practice. You build the structure on the course Content page, and the order of modules and lessons sets the sequence in which a student goes through the course.

How a course structure works

The course content is a list of modules with lessons inside them. A module can work in one of two modes: A new module is created as a header module, and a new lesson inside a module is created with content right away. You switch the module mode in its settings.
For a bundle course, this page shows the list of courses in the bundle instead of modules and lessons. Learn more in Course bundles.
Employees with the “Course management” permission (for all courses or for a specific course) can work with the structure. Learn more about permissions in Access rights.

Creating a module and a lesson

1

Open the course content

Go to Courses, select a course and open Content. The header shows how many modules and lessons the course has.
2

Add a module

Click Add module in the page header or below the list of modules. If the course is empty, click Create module. The module appears at the end of the list.
3

Add lessons to the module

Under the module, type a name in the New lesson name field and press Enter or click Add lesson. The name can be up to 120 characters long. If the field is empty, the lesson is created with the name “Untitled”. Another way is the add icon in the module row.
4

Fill the lesson

Click the lesson. A new lesson opens on the Settings tab. Then go to Content to add theory, and turn on Practice for the lesson if you need tasks.
Type lesson names right when you create them. This way you can quickly sketch the structure of the whole course without opening each lesson.

Lesson sections

The lesson menu has three sections:
  • Settings: name, brief description, cover, status, access and completion thresholds. Learn more in Lesson and practice settings.
  • Content: the lesson content builder. Learn more in Lesson content.
  • Practice: tasks for the student. The section becomes active after you turn on the Practice for the lesson toggle (for a module, Practice for the module). Learn more in Practice.
A header module only has Settings: it has no content and no practice.

Order of modules and lessons

You set the order on the Content page:
  • Lessons inside a module: drag them with the mouse. The lesson number within the module is shown to the left of the row.
  • Modules: move them through the module actions menu with Move up or Move down.
  • Move a lesson to another module through the actions menu: Transfer to module → select a module → Transfer. The lesson goes to the end of the selected module.
  • Turn a lesson into a module in the same place: in the list of modules, select Make it a module.
The Transfer to module item is only available for items without nested lessons. You cannot move a module with lessons into another module. The order matters for more than display. With sequential progression, the student opens lessons strictly in order. Learn more in Lesson and practice settings.

Publishing

Each module and lesson has a status: A new module or lesson is created as a draft. To change the status, click the status icon in the lesson row and select Published or Draft. A double click on the icon switches the status right away.
Students see a lesson only if both the lesson and its module are published. If the lesson is published but the module is not, the status icon is highlighted in orange with the hint “Will be visible after module publication”.
Stars in the course header count only published lessons and modules with content.

Demo access

You can open a lesson or module to people who have not bought the course yet (commercial schools only). In the lesson actions menu, select Make it free. To undo it, select Make it paid. A demo lesson is marked with a globe icon and is available to any user without enrollment.
  • Demo access is available only in paid courses. Free courses and corporate schools do not have this toggle.
  • A demo lesson cannot have practice. When you turn a lesson into a demo, practice is turned off automatically. To bring it back, make the lesson paid and turn on Practice for the lesson again. The tasks are kept.

Copying

In the lesson actions menu or on its settings page, click Create a copy. The copy:
  • is created with the Draft status;
  • carries over the content, pinned files, settings and practice with tasks;
  • for a module, also copies all of its lessons.

Deleting

Click Delete lesson (or Delete module) in the actions menu and confirm.
When you delete a module, all of its lessons are deleted too. You cannot restore a deleted lesson or module from the interface.

Rules and limits

Frequently asked questions

Check the module status. A lesson is visible only if both the lesson and its module are published. The lesson can also be closed for a specific student: for example, they have not completed the previous lesson, the lesson opens on the group schedule, or it is turned off in the group settings.
Employees with access to course management see all lessons without progress restrictions. A student opens lessons according to the course rules. To see a lesson through the student’s eyes, use Preview in the lesson settings.
A header module only groups lessons, and the student does not take it. A module with content works like a lesson: it has theory, can have practice, and the student takes it in the common sequence.
Open the lesson actions menu, select Transfer to module, choose the module and click Transfer. The lesson goes to the end of the selected module.
No, a deleted lesson cannot be restored in the interface. If you are not sure, switch the lesson to Draft instead of deleting it. Students will stop seeing it, and the content will be kept.
Practice is available only to course participants. Instead of the practice section, a demo lesson shows the hint: “Change the type to “Access after payment” to unlock the practice section”.
The content, pinned files, settings and practice with tasks. The copy is created as a draft, so students will see it only after you publish it.
Yes. With sequential progression, the next lesson opens only after the student meets the conditions of the previous one. So the order of lessons sets the student’s path.
