A group is a cohort of students inside one course. Each group has its own students, curators, chats, access period, lesson opening schedule and deadlines. Course access works through groups: a student can study while they are in at least one group of this course. Groups are handy when one course runs in several cohorts: for example, a spring and an autumn intake, a separate group for a corporate client or for a VIP tariff. To learn how to set up a group, see Group settings.

How groups work

  • A group always belongs to one course. You cannot move it to another course.
  • When you create a course, the “Group 1” group is created automatically. A course always keeps at least one group.
  • The group name is unique within the course and is up to 100 characters long.
  • One student can be in several groups of a course. Then the most lenient conditions apply to them: if a lesson is open in at least one of their groups, the lesson is available.
  • There is no limit on the number of students in a group.

Where to find groups

Open Courses → course → Groups. The page shows group cards with the number of participants. Click a group to open it. The group menu has four sections: A course bundle has no Access to lessons and Completion deadlines sections.

Create a group

1

Open the course groups

Go to Courses → course → Groups and click Create a group.
2

Enter a name

Fill in the Group name field. While the name is empty, the create button is inactive.
3

Choose students (optional)

Find school users and select them. You can choose up to 250 people at a time. You can skip this step and add students later.
4

Create the group

Click Create a group. The new group’s settings open — assign curators and set restrictions.
The new group is linked to the most recently created launch of the course. If you closed the window without creating the group, the next time you open it you see the Restore draft? offer.

How students join a group

You choose the group for a tariff in its settings (commercial schools only). If you leave the “New group for the tariff” option when creating a tariff, the platform creates a group with the tariff name. Learn more in Launch and tariffs. In a corporate school, employees join a group by assignment, by a course invitation link or by automatic assignment rules — see Courses in a company and Automatic course assignment.
When a student joins a group, they are automatically assigned one of the group’s curators, if there are any. The student is added to the group chat and channel if they are turned on, and if Telegram is connected to the group, they get invitation links.

Add students manually

Staff with the “School user management” permission (in a corporate school — “Company user management”) can add and remove students.
1

Open the group students

In the group, go to the Students section and click Add students.
2

Choose users

Find school users and select them — up to 250 people at a time.
3

Add

Click Add participants. People who are already in the group are not duplicated.
You can’t add a blocked user to a group manually: if they are among the selected users, an error appears. Remove them from the selection or unblock them first. Automatic enrollment scenarios skip blocked users.
You can also add a student to a group from other places: from the user card and when creating a user. Learn more in Course access.

Group student list

The Students section has a table with the Student, Current lesson, Progress, Curator, Tariff (commercial schools only), Added and Access until columns. If Telegram is connected to the group, there is a Telegram column with the invitation status.
  • Filters: Participant status (In progress, Completed), Lesson, Curator, Added by, Enrollment date, Progress.
  • Search by students.
  • Export the list as .xlsx, .csv or JSON.
  • Group switcher in the header — a quick way to go to the students of another group of the course.
  • Curators — the avatars of the group curators with a link to the settings.
In a corporate school, the list also has the Active and Dismissed tabs — see Training reports.

Remove a student from a group

Hover over the student’s row, click the delete icon and confirm. After that:
  • the student leaves the group chat and channel, and the bot removes them from the Telegram channel and group;
  • if the student has no other groups in this course, course access is turned off;
  • the student’s progress is kept.

Delete a group

You delete a group in the group Settings. Learn more in Group settings.

Who can work with groups

Frequently asked questions

A group is always needed: course access works through it. If there is one cohort, use “Group 1”, which is created with the course — extra groups are optional.
The group selected in the tariff settings. Each tariff has its own group, so buyers of different tariffs can study in different groups.
Yes. Then the most lenient conditions of both groups apply to them: a lesson is open if it is open in at least one group, and access has no end date if at least one group has no time limit.
The course already has a group with the same name — you see the “The group name is not unique” error. Choose another name. Names can repeat in different courses.
You cannot delete the last group of a course, a group selected in a tariff, or a group linked to a course bundle. First choose another group in the tariff or unlink the group from the bundle.
First add them to the new group, then remove them from the old one. This way, course access is not interrupted. In the new group, the student is assigned its curator.
No. The limit applies only to one add operation: up to 250 students at a time.
Only staff with the “School user management” permission (in a corporate school — “Company user management”) can add students to groups. Ask the owner or an administrator to grant this permission in My school → Team (in a corporate school — Company → Administrators).
Yes, through tariffs (commercial schools only): a student who paid for a tariff joins the tariff’s group, and a student who enrolls in a free course joins the most recently created group. Automatic assignment by departments and positions is available only in the corporate school mode — see Automatic course assignment.
